Videos

I really enjoyed watching these two videos, especially the second one about america. I think it is very interesting that a picture can be both a lie and a truth at the same time. With the falsely convicted criminals i thought that it was strange how the victims memories were changed by the pictures themselves. On the pictures of the lake, i really thought that was interesting because I always think of Utah Lake as being really gross but the pictures and video he took of it were very beautiful and I never would have guessed that they were of Utah Lake. A picture really can be either a lie or a harsh truth, but either way they expose real life

Purple Star Plant In the Green Pot

This is my purple star plant in the green pot on my porch taken frrom the above. I love this picture because it was exposed way well and the leaves look way cool all fanning out from the center and getting blurry while the center is the most in focus part. I also really like the contrast of the green and purple colors, Yep it's pretty sweet and oit was definitely my favorite one i took on this assignment

OOPS

The pictures on the post got kind of messed up. The merry go round one got moved to the top and cut off half. sorry!

Eugene Atget

This seems like a very french merry go round. I cant explain it. But I do think that the
shape of the picture is nice, how the circle curves out

I think this first one is probably my favorite because it shows all these little details about
how many parts of paris were at this time period. The houses are tall and rickety
and the cobblestone road is so narrow.

I like this picture just because it holds my attention so well.
I keep thinking what the heck is she looking at.

I dont know what to think about this one its almost a little bit to contrasty and
grainy for me, even though I know that that's kind of the style.

.

I just thought this was crazy. Not only is it a cool picture being all sepia toned and everything, but look at those corsets! whose waist is really that small?

About: Eugene Atget was born in 1857 near the french city of Bordeaux, was orphaned at seven and raised by his uncle. After working as a sailor for a few years, he decided to become an actor, but without much success. He married Valentine DeLafosse, an actress with whom he spent the rest of his life. He had a very bohemian affection for the working person and always was concerned about the petty tradespeople and mechants who were threatened by the modernization and rise of the big paris department stores. He was said to be quite eccentiric and by his fifties he refused to eat anything but bread, milk, and sugar.

Work: Nearly all of Atget's photography documents the street life of Paris, where he lived. In his work, he seemed to cooly avoid perfection, but still acheive a level of it. His pictures were very exposing and eye opening. They recognized that which was ugly and beautiful about Paris life, and created something completely different. His photography happened so early in the world of photography that his style was very different from so many of the photographers today, but he made it work, and he made some very interesting and beautiful images that are still appreciated today.

Imogene Cunningham

I like this one of the man in the hat because it conveys a small sense of mystery since his face is partially obscured.

I LOVE this picture of the magnolia because it is so detailed. Look at all of the little curls on the center part!

This is a picture of Frida Kahlo who was a famous artist. I think its cool that Imogene cunningham made an artist in to a piece of art.

The cala lilies in this picture create a really interesting line that draws the eye to the center of the flower. Pretty contrast.

I think this picture is very romantic. I couldnt find any information on who the people were, but the picture really conveys a lot of emotion.

About: Imogene Cunningham was an American photographer known for her photography of botanicals and industry. She was born in Portland, Oregon in 1883. When she was 23 she first encountered the work of Gertrude Kasebier which influenced her to take up photography as an art. She subsidized her tuition at the U of Washington by taking pictures of plants for the botany department. After graduating she went to work with Edward S Curtis in Seattle. She went on to win awards for her portraits that she took in 1913.

Work: Imogene Cunningham is the name of my enlarger and I couldnt think of a photographer to do this on so I looked her up. It turns out I really like her pictures. She took lots of photographs of plants and I love taking pictures of plants so thats one reason I really like her. Her portraits also do a very good job of depicting emotion and I really like that. Since she took her pictures so long ago that the film has a very sepia colored tone and I like that a lot too. It gives the pictures a much different feel.
